The Magic Of Writing Letters

It is with pride that I can say that I have one penpal and soon two.

During Quarantine (yes, capital Q) I got so extremely bored, that I decided to write my best friend a letter.

One must know that my friends and I have a weird coping mechanism that is called: “Pretend you’re an immortal enchantress/vampire/ghost who has a long list of mortal lovers and lives in a cottage/castle/manor, instead of dealing with your emotions”.

That’s how we deal with our issues. Oops.

So anyway, while writing these letters we pretended to e vampires and ghosts and kind of roleplayed (?). I had never done that before but it was nice to escape from reality every once in a while.

After the roleplay stuff, there would come the sappy stuff: we would tell each other that they meant a hell of a lot and that was nice too, especially in Quarantine.

Next to the cool conversations you get from writing letters, it also has an incredible aesthetic. My friend has a wax seal that she stamps on all her letters and she also decorates the envelopes with it.

I usually write on coloured paper and sent gifts like handmade scrunchies or small paintings, while my friend sents me teabags with an extraordinary taste.

This way of communicating feels so authentic and beautiful to me! And you get such a rush of anticipation for the next letter. That’s what really makes the difference with text messages for me. In this world of fast communication, it’s nice to sometimes slow down for a bit.

I hope you enjoyed reading this and that it might have inspired you to become penpals with someone. If you have a penpal already, let me know in the comments!

Love,

Frae
